The victims of the Khojaly tragedy were commemorated in Thessaloniki

A commemorative event entitled "Justice for Khojaly!" was held in Thessaloniki on the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, organized by the "Gala" Greek-Azerbaijani Friendship Society.

The event began with a minute of silence to honor the cherished memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide

The chairman of the society, Rashid Mammadov, said that hundreds of innocent people were killed by Armenians with particular cruelty in the Khojaly tragedy. He noted that the legal and political assessment of the Khojaly genocide was first given by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev: “On the initiative of the Great Leader, on February 24, 1994, the Milli Majlis adopted a decision on the “Khojaly Genocide Day”. The National Leader signed a special Decree on the Khojaly genocide on March 1, 1994. Subsequently, by the decision of the Milli Majlis, February 26 was declared the Khojaly genocide and the day of national mourning. On February 25, 1997, the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev signed another Decree “On declaring a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide”.

The international campaign “Justice for Khojaly!” was launched on May 8, 2008 - the day of the occupation of Shusha. The campaign aimed at recognizing the tragedy is being successfully implemented in many countries of the world. As a result of this campaign, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation recognized the heinous acts committed in Khojaly as a mass crime against humanity and called on its member states to give the necessary political and legal assessment to this tragedy. Currently, the national legislative bodies of 18 states, as well as 24 states of the USA, as well as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Organization of Turkic States have adopted numerous resolutions and decisions condemning the massacre of civilians in Khojaly, evaluating it as an act of genocide and a crime against humanity.

It was emphasized that the city of Khojaly was liberated as a result of local anti-terrorist measures carried out by the Azerbaijani Army in Karabakh, and President, Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev raised the National Flag of Azerbaijan in the city of Khojaly on October 15.

The chairman of the society called on public organizations to more diligently defend Azerbaijan's rightful position at international and regional events and on social networks.

At the end, a documentary film and photo exhibition dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide were shown.
